I was watching something on TV yesterday and the character was talking about memories. A minute or two later it was said that the sense of sound and smell is stronger than the sound of sight in evoking memories. This struck me because just this weekend I came across a blog and the blogger posted a Joan Baez song. I clicked on her link to listen to the song and before I knew it I was so overwhelmed by memories that I started crying. Not because I was sad. I was just flooded with so many memories.
I ended up googling (sp?) the album I had as a teenager and apparently it is unavailable. I used to listen to the Joan Baez Ballard Book all the time. I spent a while on Rhapsody finding all of the songs and listening to it. I found this clip on YouTube of one of my favorite from the album
I have also noticed in the past that smells can do the same thing for me. Sometimes I smell things that remind me of my grandmother and great grandmother and it brings back a flood of memories.
I also have memories of the smell of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that has been in a metal lunch box. It reminds me of being in elementary school. I can almost picture the lunch table I was sitting at when I have that smell come to me.
I have rambled...sorry.
What do you think about how our senses trigger memories.
take care,

Dawn, that is such a lovely, touching post. I am the same way about scents. It's a little embarrassing, but I cry when I smell Old Spice, because it was one of my Dad's fav after shaves. Every time a little old man walks by me in WalMart and I smell it, I have a moment when I have to just take hold of myself so I don't start sobbing. I still have my Dad's last bottle and sometimes when I really miss him, I take the top of and have a good whiff.
Oh how strange...
i was just thinking of typing what Nola did!
Yes, old spice and my dad.....
The smell of phlox takes me back to my childhood. I could just sit on my deck and smell them all summer......what a great post. I like Joan Baez too.....and Neil Young......

Hi Dawn, yes smells sounds etc. do bring out our memories. I so get what you are saying. Music is very big at reminders of the times when you listened to it. If it was popular and was played a lot, the memories really come to mind.
I had a reaction to a record by Dr. Seuss. When I was pregnant with my youngest child, my older children played it constantly. Years later when I heard that song I immediately felt sick to my stomach. HA! No kidding, I wouldn't have believed it if someone told me it had happened to them. Silly but so true.
I too loved the music by Joan Baez. Love that song.
Hugs, Jeanne
