Actually Timmy is dreaming, wishing and hoping for a dog. I haven't had a dog in over thirty years since I was younger. The only pet he's ever had are beta fish. He's 10 ½ now and can't stop thinking about it. He's been watching the shows on Animal planet researching the kind of dog we should get (IF WE GET ONE!). He's been on line looking for the best dog for us.
He's even started a journal writing about his wishes. Two days ago he wrote on his on blog about wanting a dog. He's considering a beagle. I told him IF we were to get one we would have to wait until the summer because we will be home then and it wouldn't be fair to bring a puppy into the house when we would both be at school all day.
Do any of you dog lovers have any pointers for this poor conflicted mother?
take care,
Dawn

I vote for Tim to get his dog. A boy--no--child should have one. We're dachshund people. They don't shed, unless you get the long-haired type. They have few if any fleas. They don't smell as badly as furry dogs do, so they need fewer baths. They don't need long walks, and they are sooo cute. Like most dogs, housebreaking is the CHORE.
Let Tim be the ONLY one to feed the dog, and the dog will be HIS DOG.
Oh boy Dawn, I appreciate where you are making this decision. We got a dog when our kids were young. We had a Great Dane, and he was a fabulous member of our family. He was an inside dog and despite his size this was no problem. He was very gentle and loving--think "Marmaduke" from the cartoon strip. Keep us posted on your final decision.
Hi Dawn,
We got a dachshund when Jonathan was about 10. The best dog we ever had!
Later Kelli had one, and her personality was a little more difficult although she was sweet.
I think beagles are adorable. Recently we were on the golf cart and Cooper was in my lap with Connor driving. We had a little beagle follow us all around the neighborhood. Cooper squealed with delight....I now think I might like to try a beagle!
Just remember even at his age YOU will be doing a lot of the caring for the dog. He can walk, play and feed the dog. But when it comes right down to it Lexi wasn't tuned in enough for the constant housebreaking (training) and staying on top of the little clues for Lucy to go out (to get her housebroken). It was ultimately me.
Awwww... I love beagles! I miss Ruby! I think Tim would do good with a dog!
Oh, Dawn, get that boy a dog! He's old enough now to really take responsibility and there's nothing like the friendship they will share! I know, I'm being bossey! I just love dogs so much and always had one growing up and remember the joys of doghood!!
Be a sweetie and thank you for all the sweet compliments.
Shelia ;)
Yes, get him one. Soon. You will never regret it. (Except when he chews your zillion dollar purse - the dog...not Timmy and even then you'll get over it) Years from now it will be one of the memories that keep you close! Good luck, Timmy!
Yes Little Boys just love dogs. I think you should look into rescueing a dog. Perhaps you could take him to the animal shelter in Dennis and let him volunteer to walk a dog. Besides, they are only pups for a little while. Why not get one that is already house trained. Dont know if this will help but just something I thought I might add to the mix. Darrell
Hi Dawn, It sounds like Tim is making a very responsible and sound decision, putting so much thought and effort into his decision. That is probably a great sign he will take very good care of his dog! :) We have had several dogs through the years, and the best dogs and easiest (not as sickly), were always pound or rescue dogs! We have one about 13 years old now and he has the best temperment! He grew up with David, ...that says a lot! LOL!
Thanks for your encouraging comments on my post yesterday! They meant so much and I appreciate your friendship alot! ~hugs, Rhonda :)
Oh that pic of the beagle is adorable. I think Tim will be an excellent caregiver to the puppie,he is just the right age.
Dawn, Please let Tim have a dog; and please rescue one from a shelter! I was never a dog lover (I'm a cat person), but I can't tell you what a difference little Chili (dachshund puppy) has made in our lives since we got him in December. I will not kid you, there is a lot of work and responsibility, but the love and affection Time will get in return is sooooo worth the work! Okay, let's all chant: Tim needs a dog! Tim needs a dog!
Any kind of hound always seems to have a doggy odor to me no matter how much you bathe them. I have always had a pug, great kids dog, tend to shed a lot but the super personality makes up for that, they are like clowns in a dog suit! As big dogs go, a boxer would be a wonderful choice. They never grow up, always playful, great family pet, excellent watch dog, very short hair. I have one of them as well and 4 others. I grew up around them as my parents raised beautiful boxers. Labs and golden retreivers are a good choice also. Tough decision I know. Best of luck!
You know, I bet Tim will be an awesome dog owner/dog friend!!! You might remember that we got Gray a beagle from the shelter a couple years ago for his birthday. He's truly a great dog...so good with the kids, so good with the cats, just a sweet personality. But he is stubborn as hell! Nevertheless, we love him to pieces.
