Chinese New Year

This year is the year of the Ox. I was born in the year of the Ox. Hmmmm, I wonder if this will be a good year for me? Our president is an Ox as well. The other day something struck me that was pretty hard to face up to. This is the FIRST time in my life that I have been OLDER than the president of the United States. Granted it is only by four months, but it's still hard to accept.

Every year in school I celebrate Chinese New Year with my class. This year I have a little girl who was born in China. She and her father have been teaching us Chinese. (She's Chinese but he isn't.) We are learning to count and write a few words. It's interesting and fun for the children!

Yesterday I cooked noodles for the class and they all tried eating with chopsticks. It was quite fun! I also made some pork fried rice to bring in. The children didn't care that much for it. The adults liked it though. I had so much that I shared with a handful of teachers. We will be making several projects this week in celebration. I am hoping to end the week making oxes with the class.

take care,
Dawn

Good morning Dawn. I know you are probably at school already. We ate Chinese food last night. The waiter gave us a fancy bit of history on a piece of paper slipped in to a pretty red envelope of what food means in the Chinese New Year. I bet if you stopped by a Chinese restaurant you might get that information.

Have fun this week with your theme. I hope you are feeling well.

Hugs...Jeanne

Hi Dawn
Thats a nice way to celebrate the Chinese New Year. I forget what I am actually....so I will have to look it up.
Nice that they are learning the language and using chop sticks too. We'll wait to see what other project you have on the go with them.

Keep feeling good...and have a lovely day

I too was born in the year of the Ox. You do so many things with your class. They are so blessed to have you as a teacher! Our schools are closed today cause the whole State is covered in a sheet of ice! YUCK!

I was born in the year of the snake. Yuk! I like Chinese food, and I have a bunch of stuff "made in China" in my home. That's the full extent of my knowledge of things Chinese.

Your students now know more about China than I do! Shame on me.

I want to be in your class too Dawn! I would love to see the children all trying to eat with chopsticks at once!

Looks like I'm a monkey, if I am seeing the calendar correctly. Your students are lucky to have a fun teacher like you.

Hey Dawn,
I checked the chart on the top of your page and I was born in the year of the sheep. :)
The fried rice was great!
Thanks again,
Wendy

Dawn I would have loved to be your student :0). You seem to make classroom/learning time so interesting and fun and you celebrate the uniqueness of your class kids. Yay! I'll bet it was hoot to see those little fingers trying to maneuver chopsticks. I still have a hard time myself.
I checked the chart, and confirmed it. I'm a monkey... lol!

Your students must love having you as a teacher! What fun! My hubby, myself and my son were all born in the year of the monkey and my daughter was born in the year of the rat. Not much variety in our household. My parents are both horse, one brother was a boar and the other was a rabbit. Now that was a varied household!
