Pink Saturday #6

It is PINK SATURDAY. My friend Beverly of How Sweet The Sound is again hosting a PINK SATURDAY . Check out her blog and visit all the PINK posts today.

A couple of years ago our sweet hostess and I were in a circle journal swap and of all things Beverly's theme was a PINK one :) For her circle journal I chose to tell the story of the roses that were in my yard. If you read my blog earlier this week I told the story of my great grandmother's button tin. I spent a lot of time at her house when I was younger. When I was a teenager my great grandmother died and my mother inherited her house. In the back of the house outside of what was my great grandmother's bedroom were some Cape Cod roses. (I don't know if that is the technical name but it's what I've always called them). Several years ago my mother sold that house and before it was sold I had Rich go over, dig up the roses and bring them here.

They now grow in my front yard and all summer long when I look out the front window I see those roses. They remind me of my great grandmother. I am so glad I brought them here. Along with the roses though, came the bittersweet that was growing with them at the old house. It is a chore to try to keep the bittersweet under control. I'm very happy to have the roses, bittersweet and all.

take care,
Dawn

Your love for these roses is certainly a symbol of your love for your great-grandmother. I know she must be smiling when she looks in on you. You must make her very proud.

Dawn, I dream of roses like these in my yard. I'm looking, but I don't know what to buy. I want some of those easy growing, disease resistant, climbing roses, in just that color. I love that you saved them and the reminder of your great grandmother. I know it means so much to you. I have never seen bittersweet growing.. Will it grow here I wonder.

Love ya, Jeanne

I'm so glad you still have her roses! They are lovely. I drive by my Grandma's houses (both of them) and see the roses and instantly feel happy & sad all @ the same time. I love that you cherish what came before as much as I do. Take care!

What a treasured heirloom you have in those roses! They are lovely! I dug up some old fashioned peonies from my sister's yard before she moved and I'm so glad I did! There is nothing like the old fashioned flowers, especially in your case, where you can look at them and remember your great grandmother!

The circle journal you mentioned sounds very interesting, what exactly is it?

I love the roses! I have learned and sentiment and memory go hand in hand with life's greatest themes. It is wonderful to live amidst both!Revel in the good and learn patience and forbearance through the bad. You are a fortunate woman.

Dawn you are so lucky and smart to have dug up the old roses. Most of the ones today have been crossbred so much that they don't have any fragrance left. I can just imagine how wonderful these must smell. Bittersweet memories! Hugs, Nancy

Hi Dawn,
I love those roses too. Some of my favorite plants came from family, friends, and neighbors. And yes, sometimes you get an unexpected bonus (or weed), but that's life!
