Hush Little Baby

Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
If that mockingbird don't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.
If that diamond ring turns to brass,
Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass.
If that looking glass gets broke,
Mama's gonna buy you a billy-goat.
If that billy-goat won't pull,
Mama's gonna buy you a cart and bull.
If that cart and bull turns over,
Mama's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
If that dog named Rover won't bark,
Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart.
If that horse and cart falls down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

This is a picture of Jack taking a nap here the other day. He's so darn cute. The purpose of me sharing this is to tell you a little story about that song. When Britt was a very young child I would sing that song to her. Every time I sang it she would cry. (no, I don't have a bad singing voice LOL!) It wasn't a regular cry and was an emotional cry, like the song invoked some kind of feeling in her. I always thought it was odd that she would cry like that. When Tim was a baby I would sing it to him as well (remember they are 18 years apart in age so he wasn't around when I would sing to her). Whenever I would sing it to him he would start crying, the same kind of emotional cry! When he was old enough to share his feelings I asked him why he would cry and he told me that it reminded him of being a baby and he missed it.

Just out of curiosity I have sung the song to Mackenzie (who knows, it could have been a genetic fluke that it makes children in my family cry). Apparently she has escaped that gene....nothing! Well, she did sit on my lap and let me sing it to her. I tried singing it to Jack the other day. The verdict is still out on him. He's too young. Don't worry though I'll keep you updated!

take care,
Dawn

Oh my...I just want to reach right through this screen and snuggle that little guy up! He is just pricelessly beautiful!

My kids cry when I sing anything to them...and it is because of my singing voice!

Such a very sweet, tender post...Jack is a little angel. I could jus kiss his sweet, apple-cheeks! I remember that song from my mother singing it to me--until I was well into toddlerhood! My sister is having a baby--just found out today she'll be having a girl!--I hope she will sing to her daugther too. Happy weekend to you & yours ((HUGS)) And thank you for you lovely comment at my blog :o)

you really grabbed my heart with your story... I used to sing that same song to my youngest grandson. each of them have "their" song and that was his - he didn't cry though, just drifted off to sleep, which was the point. ;)

Jack is so precious - just adorable!
